One generation passeth away, and another generation cometh: but the Earth abideth for ever. Her book is dedicated, tenderly, to the coming generation, her children and grandchildren. Bakewell is an advertisement for active survival. So, too, is the hyperactively authorial Diana Athill (98), who also offers a short book of memoirs.
